The UT Austin - NEH Regional Workshop will bring together humanities scholars and practitioners from central Texas to learn about new opportunities in humanities-centered research and funding. Through presentations, panel discussions, and 1:1 consultations with agency program officers, attendees will explore community-engaged scholarship and gain knowledge and skills to develop successful NEH proposals.
Geared toward academic and higher education funding opportunities, this multi-day program is free and open to the public. We encourage individual scholars, research collaborators and staff, and representatives from cultural institutions to attend. All sessions will be in-person, and NEH's keynote presentation will be recorded and made available on OVPR's resource library.
To explore funding opportunities for public-facing programs, check out parallel sessions offered in-person and online by NEH and Humanities Texas.
Dr. Russell Wyland served in several capacities in the NEH since 1990, including fourteen years as Deputy Director of the Division of Research Programs. Russ has conducted over 70 outreach workshops with colleges, universities, state humanities councils, and scholarly organizations; he has chaired over 160 peer review panels, and worked closely with NEH partners, including the Library of Congress, National Science Foundation, and the Mellon Foundation.
Dr. Beauty Bragg joined the National Endowment for the Humanities in 2020 as a Senior Program Officer in the Division of Research Programs. Her responsibilities include leading the Summer Stipends program and serving as a co-chair of the agency’s Equity Task Force on data collection capacity. Beauty earned a B.A. in American literature from the University of Southern California and an M.A. and Ph.D. in English from The University of Texas at Austin. She is the author of Reading Contemporary African American Literature: Black Women’s Popular Fiction, Post-Civil Rights Experience and the African American Canon (Lexington Books, 2015), an exploration of the ways in which “popular women writers challenge the marginalization of black women in the public discourse on black identity” in genres from chick lit to urban fiction and hip hop memoir.
Jennifer Lyon Gardner, Deputy Vice President for Research at UT Austin, will give opening remarks.
Russell Wyland, NEH, will lead an informational session on NEH programs with a focus on opportunities for humanities scholars and institutions of higher education.
This session will be recorded and made available through OVPR's resource library after the workshop. All other sessions will be in-person only.
A panel of interdisciplinary humanities scholars will discuss their recently funded projects in public outreach and community engagement. Humanities Texas, the state humanities council, will discuss their role in connecting scholars and cultural institutions to the broader public.
